NRA EVP Search Committee To Meet

Only Guns And Money has the story. There are some noteworthy things here

  1. While all directors who are not on the committee are invited to attend, they will have to pay their own way. We’ve heard word that the Legal Affairs Committee recently met, to be briefed on the recent disasters, and issued the same invitation on the same terms. It looks like the powers that be want to be able to say (in court or otherwise) that the entire board was invited, with the reality being that few will actually be able to attend.
  2. The committee is not charged with choosing candidates and presenting them to the entire board. Rather, it is to present a list “to the Nominating Committee and, ultimately, the full Board of Directors.” In other words, a committee of insiders will present a list to another committee of real insiders, and the board will only see the candidates that have made it past both insider screenings. The insiders are taking no chances here.
  3. Buz Mills, who actually has run a serious business, has pointed out the way a business would handle replacing its CEO: create a committee of directors with administrative experience, they’d hire professional employment agencies to hunt for qualified candidates, interview them, and have the entire board hold a “meet and greet” with the best candidates. “This is how a professional Board of Directors of a world class not-for-profit begins to heal itself. We have an opportunity to carefully choose to correct the path we are on. We have the opportunity to recover all of the membership that has abandoned us over these issues (2 million members +/-). We have the opportunity to recover the trust of our most benevolent donors. We have an opportunity to recover the respect of our industry and of the American people. There is no downside to doing this correctly.”
  4. Instead, things are being run the traditional way: through internal politics of ambitious and avaricious men, who seek the job for themselves or for potential patrons who will repay them with cash and/or power.
  5. A 150 year-old organization, founded by Civil War veterans, dedicated to constitution and country, which has been presided over by multiple Medal of Honor holders, deserves better than being fought over as spoils for some tiny individuals!
  6. Oh, for Harlon and Neal to return and lead the organization!
  7. Eric Hoffer: “Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.” I suppose Harlon and Neal saw the movement, those that came after turned it into a business, and those that came in the 1990s evolved it into a racket. Can this be reversed? We have no idea.

  1. This process is an anathema to a proper CEO search ad Buz point out. I’ve led 4 non-profit CEO search committees in my career and this process appears to be nothing but a thin veneer for the cabal of insiders to get one of their own installed by a rubber stamp board.

  2. Nothing lasts forever. The Greek and Roman empires fell. The British empire fell. America is America in name only. So goes the NRA. Prosperity leads to complacency and laziness, and the go along to get along attitude comes in, as the the crooks and tyrants come to power and seize the day. It’s over.

  3. Who is sending this information to Judge Cohen?
    He needs to see this!

Whoever is testifying in part 2 of the trial needs to collect this as proof of same old, same old continuation.
It is 2024. All board members could be invited to a Zoom like call. The board members who don’t go would place a huge target (for re-election) on themselves for not being involved in the process.

  4. NRA members need to speak up to stop being steamrollered yet again. Buz Mills has called for NRA members to send letters and emails to the directors to help in his effort to put a stop to this. So we have a choice at this watershed moment in NRA’s history — stand up and fight for its future, or sit on our hands and watch it whither and die. NRA members are needed to send emails to nrabod@nrahq.org ASAP. You must include your NRA member number and contact information, otherwise your email will not be forwarded to the directors. Buz says sentiment on the Board is shifting, but he needs our help to do what needs to be done.
