Rocky Marshall’s Prediction Of NRA’s Financial Condition

by Former NRA Director Rocky Marshall

Opinion Published June 13, 2023

The following opinion presents an updated financial analysis of the National Rifle Association (NRA) by examining the correlation between US gun sales and NRA revenues. Based on the analysis, revenue projections are made, highlighting the potential catastrophe the NRA has created.

The correlation analysis comparing US gun sales and NRA revenues reveals a consistent revenue coefficient of $12 per gun sold. Utilizing this coefficient, projections are made for the NRA’s revenues based on the number of guns sold from January to May 2023, which annualizes to 16.2 million units. Accordingly, estimated revenues for January to May are $81.4 million, with a forecast of $195 million for the entire year.

(Chart showing NRA revenues 2020-2023 are consistently predicted by new gun sales x $12, except for one year at $13).

However, these projections starkly contrast with the NRA’s budget of $230 million, which appears unrealistic given the current downward trends and decline in gun sales. This raises concerns about the organization’s financial sustainability, particularly considering the anticipated legal expenses that may further strain its finances.

The Board of Directors plays a critical role in overseeing an organization’s financial management, ensuring transparency, and upholding accountability. However, in the case of the NRA, there are indications of a lack of transparency, as financial information is being withheld from Directors. This lack of disclosure suggests potential complicity in deceptive practices.

During the most recent NRA board meeting, no Directors questioned the financials or expressed concerns about the possibility of insolvency. This negligence is concerning, as it reflects a failure to fulfill their core responsibilities in safeguarding the NRA’s financial health and future.

This level of negligence exhibited by the NRA Directors is reminiscent of the children’s nursery rhyme; “The Three Blind Mice,” wherein the mice run around aimlessly until being caught by the Farmer’s wife. Not only has the NRA Board lost not only it’s sight, but also the ability to speak and question the deceptions that are presented at Board meetings.

The NRA’s financial crisis demands immediate attention and action. The alarming revenue projections, coupled with the lack of transparency and negligence displayed by the Board of Directors, pose significant threats to the organization’s survivability. Unfortunately, the NRA Board inactions and wonted neglect suggests they do not give a damn!

  1. just an observation regarding the last sentence in this posting, quote:
Unfortunately, the NRA Board inactions and wonted neglect suggests they do not give a damn!
    unquote

is quite misleading especially since half way through this posting there is a statement stating, quote:
“…there are indications of a lack of transparency, as financial information is being withheld from Directors.
    unquote

if the BoD had financial information withheld per se., seem a bit of a leap to unequivocally stating they “they do not give a damn!”

especially since it has been pointed out in the past postings, senior management has gone out of the way to mislead the members of the BoD et al., of a myriad of critical organizational data; as well as previous postings to date have provided insight those who dare raise their hand or voice to address concerns are unceremoniously told, in toto, to not raise a ruckus and be quiet!

    just an observation…

    1. You response probably got a few special characters inserted which in return made some of it unreadable. However, it appears from your statements “there are indications of a lack of transparency, as financial information is being withheld from Directors” and “especially since it has been pointed out in the past postings, senior management has gone out of the way to mislead the members of the BoD et al” that this interfered with the BODs getting the necessary information.

Let me inform you and others that information being withheld from the BODs is legally not a valid claim. According to the NY nonprofit statues it clearly states that the BODs must provide oversight and fiduciary responsibility and claiming that did not see the information or it was withheld from them does not relinquish these core responsibilities.

The proper way for the BODs to handle this is to call an emergency executive session and inform the executives that they must provide the information by a specific date and time or otherwise they will be terminated. Better yet, the vast majority of the NRA issues, NYAG lawsuit, Washington, DC lawsuit, Class Action lawsuit, etc. would go away if the BODs simply terminated Wayne’s employment yesterday!

This is one of the reasons why the NRA will be put into receivership and the vast majority the current BODs will be isolated.

      1. thanks for your response to my comment…
first, sorry there were non-standard characters received in your copy…

second, thanks for the statutory information, but pray tell how does any governing BoD know what information they are lacking so they can, “… inform the executives that they must provide the information…” ?

third, you might wish to video the NRA’s 75 BoD as they attempt to call an emergency session as well as video the session demanding Wayne be terminated, then demanding they want some information ~ tho ‘we lack specificity of exactly what we want’, ad nauseam! now that could be a comic hit serial for the ages!

finally, as for stating if the BoD were to terminate Wayne everything would be hunky dory within the organization, really… me thinks the ensuing chaos would be horrific as every tom, dick & lois would be throwing their ‘better idea’ on how to fix things from their perspective(s) [think about affect after the 1977 bloodless coup]

  2. New York Attorney General Charities Bureau has a booklet entitled RIGHT FROM THE START: RESPONSIBILITIES OF DIRECTORS OF NOT-FOR-PROFIT CORPORATIONS. It is available on the Attorney General’s web page. It informs that directors have numerous responsibilities and duties. Additional information is also available from the Charities Bureau. In summation, a director has a duty to be an informed, responsible, active manager. Being a board member is not for the lazy, the incompetent, and the coward.

    1. thanks for providing the cite, but alas, the NY Charities Bureau’s Right from the Start Resp of Directors, 2015 issue date, specifically states it is ‘guidance to assist’, per se, quote:

The Charities Bureau of the Office of the New York State Attorney General drafted
this guidance to assist current and future boards of directors of not-for-profit corporations
and trustees of charitable trusts to understand and carry out their fiduciary responsibilities to
      the organizations they serve. unquote

  3. I wrote this article to confirm where I think the NRA Revenues are trending currently. I made projections in February, and was curious about the current trajectory of guns sales. I surmised that the only hope that could alter the death spiral for the NRA would be if gun sales suddenly skyrocketed. If my theory is correct, increasing gun sales could translate into a windfall of revenues equal to $12/gun. As it turns out, gun sales have declined through the first 5 months, and I suspect my projections initially are right on track. I wrote this article as a confirmation that the NRA is heading towards insolvency and the BOD does nothing. They really do not give a damn about the NRA. In over 40 years in industry, and serving on Boards of Directors, I have never seen any group deny the obvious truth, continue to make disastrous decisions and refuse to correct course. The NRA has lost a million members and no change from NRA’s BOD. Truly unbelievable. Rocky Marshall

  4. I can’t believe people are still on the board. While jumping off at this point would still leave your personally exposed, (with little D&O coverage that might not cover any of this) it would be better than going down with this ship. Before this is all said and done I get them come after the board members when the house of cards falls.
