More On NRA’s Financial Condition

Reader Jaquebauer cited this article in a comment, and it deserves a separate post. The analysis is that NRA has dealt with its steep fall in revenue and skyrocketing legal costs by cutting steeply back on the services it provides members and the public. Over a five-year period, NRA’s program spending fell from $176 to $75 million. Education and Training went from $8 to $3 million, Field Services from $12 to $2 million, etc. Money has to be diverted from core purposes to attorneys’ fees.

The author concludes, “The organization has seen membership dues decline in the past several years, with a loss of more than 1 million members since the start of the crisis. I see a risk of a downward spiral: lower revenue, leading to less spending on programs, which leads to further declines in member dues, donations and so on.”

Update: Here’s a YouTube by “Washington Gun Law” on the subject. He points out what has been cut is the services to members, who are paying the dues. The comments are worth reading, too.

  1. As has been observed – the “windfalls” came at the cost of member benefits. It is intriguing that no mention of the diminuished “bang” that members now receive has appeared in the member magazines. Used to be membership benefits were spelled out explicitly in the NRA magazines each month. And I’m certain that everyone has observed exactly how thin the American Rifleman issue has become, outside of the advertising…

  2. “Education and Training went from $8 to $3 million”
Record setting gun sales. More people than ever needing training. The E&T team is now 3 people. Down from 8-9.
    Disgraceful.
    Circling the drain.

  4. NRA’s 2021 Form 990 is here: https://nrawatch.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/nra-2021-990.pdf

Prior year revenue was $44, 397.061; current year revenue was $9,563,987. Contributions and grants for prior year were $105,000,030; current year $84,332,090. Prior year revenue was $44,397,061; current year $9,563,987. LaPierre’s compensation was $1,093,337 plus $50,531 other compensation. Brewer Law Firm compensation was $20,255,717. Just these hard figures demonstrate that NRA’s mismanagement is nothing new. An obsequious board of directors has allowed this to happen.

  5. The management needs to be cleaned out. We have greedy people running the NRA and it will sooner or later pull the association down.
