Fire At NRA HQ

A fire broke out this morning on the second floor of one of the towers. Reports are that an electrical transformer blew. The poor repair of the headquarters building has been noted elsewhere: “John Richardson of the Only Guns and Money blog had a resolution calling out the disrepair of the NRA headquarters building in particular roof leaks, noting that the assessed value of the building actually dropped by over $1 Million last year and calling for an independent assessment and a remediation plan. The resolution was voted down.” We blogged on the failing HQ roof here and here.

NRA “leadership” must have had higher priorities, such as $100 million for the lawyers, $38,000 to fly the LaPierres to the Bahamas and $2,900 to helicopter VIPs to a NASCAR race, and $10,000 tabs to fly in cosmeticians and hair stylists for Mrs. LaPierre’s appearances. HQ maintenance just could not be afforded.

UPDATE: It now appears that a big electrical transformer adjacent to, but luckily not inside, the building erupted in flames.

  1. Is this the NRA’s fault? I thought that kind of electrical utility was supposed to be maintained by the local power company? We have transformers on power poles in our backyard and they’re the property of the power company, despite being in our backyard. Could this be an emergency generator that somehow caught fire? In that cause it would be the NRA’s fault, no doubt.

  2. This report is inaccurate, and should be deleted or properly corrected.

I saw the Twitter report yesterday. When I could find no other reporting about a fire at the building, I decided to drive over and take a look for myself. The parking lot on the south side of the building, and the lot of the building next door, were both occupied by Dominion Energy trucks and workers. (Dominion is a Northern Virginia electrical utility company.) The building was completely undamaged. No broken windows, which you inevitably see with structure fires. No signs of smoke damage. All the work by the Dominion guys was occurring outside the building. And then see the Instagram report by Fairfax Fire, linked by another commenter, which clearly says it was an outside transformer that blew yesterday morning. That is absolutely consistent with what I saw.

Please don‘t spread rumors, or at least correct them when you do make that mistake.
