NRA Disposing Of Museum Collections?

Last year, we noted a Finance Committee resolution, changing the procedure for disposing of guns donated to the National Firearms Museum. Previously, all donations were reviewed by the Gun Collectors and Finance Committees, with funds “received from the disposition to be earmarked for museum purposes.” The 2023 resolution revoked this, and provided that the Executive Vice President would make the decision single-handedly, with no earmarking of the resultant funds – they could be used for any NRA purpose (ahem, such as paying the Brewer law firm’s invoices, or leasing a private jet).

Now comes the announcement that Rock Island Auctions, traditionally used by NRA, is (for the first time we recall) selling off 2,200 collectible firearms during the upcoming Annual Meeting.

Perhaps the two matters are unrelated, but we’d suggest that anyone who has donated particularly nice guns to the museum should review the auction catalog.

  1. I guess they need to pay Brewer and since they are moving to Texas (building listing seems to have been removed on line) don’t have a place for the museum. Wonder when they will announce to the few employees that are left what the plans are for relocation once the sale goes through??

  2. It is contemptible for the Finance Committee to allow rare and unusual firearms to be sold off to pay off debts caused by the gross mismanagement of the NRA officers and board of directors. This is another example of why the NRA needs a complete reorganization.

  3. I was hoping and praying that these historical gems would end up in the newly expanded Whittington museum. Looks like my dream has been blown up.
Whittington has the land to make an incredible museum space. Just short sighted thinking on the money needing NRA operations division.
Just when I think I couldn’t dislike Brewer any more than I already do, his money grubbing scent is all over this.

Brewer needs to be fired. Please make it happen.

  4. This is NOT the NRA I became a life member of and (embarrassingly) worked for until retirement (while being grossly underpaid for the cause). It sickens me that they can still claim me as a member.

  5. When I asked Frazer about this he stated that all donor restrictions on sale or disposal would be honored for donations after 2001.

  6. This is Rock Island’s regularly scheduled spring premier auction. It would have been held at their old facility in Illinois, but they moved to just outside of Dallas. Looks like good marketing to me.

  7. For many years I watched select individuals purchase those museum quality pieces for a steal as soon as the firearms where in the NRA’s hands. What was left then went where it was supposed to go. It’s a shame it has come to this all for greed and the good ole boys club. It’s a He has it, and I want too! attitude. Until things change and the whole BOD changes, I wouldn’t even consider donating or setting up any sort of endowment.

  8. No one should be surprised that when a band of thieves are overseeing property worth a bloody fortune that those thieves would steal it, and auction it off to the highest bidder. Why is anyone surprised? Frankly, I’m surprised they didn’t auction everything off already.
